MENU NEW GAME PLUS

by Steven Sych (Canada)

Genre: Experimental, Visual novel

MENU NEW GAME PLUS presents a series of main menus for games that do not exist. The assumption is that games are more boring than imagining, that games do not need to exist to be fun, and that menus can express the whole of a game.

Three menus are presently completed, and each explore an imagined game as well as a different aspect of main menus:

  1. JITTERBUG explores the 'how to play' mini-tutorial, an impossible interface, and a technicolor camouflaging bug

  2. 8 Tons of Oxygen looks at the level select screen. It asks whether or not it is possible to experience the entire story of a game just by dividing a plot into levels

  3. Empires of Idleness asks that we generate a starting world (a la Civilization). It reimagines the 4X genre in non imperialist terms: rather than being asked to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate, players are tasked with becoming as idLe as possible

In order to explore the above game menus, you must simply click the 'new game' button in any menu. MNG+ will take you quite literally and give you a whole new game (menu). At the festival this means: puzzlement; blooming curiosity; asking your friend to come over; grasping of the premise; and a shared astonishment at how stimulating a main menu can be.
