Genre: interactive cinema
Fire Underground is an animated fantasy which presents an alternative history of coal mining that features myths of forgotten forests, crawling proto-reptiles, and chthonic infernos. It is fan-fiction of a 300-million-year history, built with craft techniques lifted from miniature making and tabletop roleplaying games, photogrammetry, conventional 3D animation, images and objects sourced from mining sites, and modified folk songs and fairy tales.
Fire Underground is interactive cinema rendered in real-time. Several scenes were built with game-like logic, featuring semi-autonomous non-player characters, ragdoll physics, and deterministic, clock-like simulation.
Total run time is variable, about 1 hour
